Art and science collide in a fascinating exhibition which explores the quantum universe. Meet the artists involved in this thought-provoking project.
Cosmic Titans: Art, Science, and the Quantum Universe is an ambitious group exhibition which offers visitors unique visualisations of the cutting-edge scientific research taking place at the University of Nottingham. Sculptural installations, virtual reality, immersive experiences, sound, light and Lego are all used to give expression to research which is transforming our future.
Matthew Woodham
Woodham’s construction of audio-visual works, alongside interactive sculpture installations, aims to provoke universal human intuitions. These pieces of artwork are situated within live settings to create real-time experiences, while integrating scientific theory and a critical approach to technology.
Woodham’s academic background in cognitive neuroscience has informed an expanded study of the common dynamics and structures described by physical and mathematical matters. Notable works include Likeness In Adaptive Dissipative Structures (2024), Vibrant Matters at the V&A (2023), Illuminar (2022), and Re-Textured at Printworks (2022).
Within the exhibition Woodham has contributed the interactive installation titled Superdecision. At the heart of quantum mechanics is the concept of superposition, where particles can exist in multiple states at once. His piece has resonated with viewers for its ability to evoke sense of depth, complexity and layered meanings.
More information about Matthew Woodham is available on his website.
Studio Above&Below
Studio Above&Below are a London based art and technology practice founded by Royal College of Art graduates, Daria Jelonek (DE) and Perry-James Sugden (UK). Through combining mixed realities experiences (XR), digital art, and data their work depicts the potential connections amid humans, machines and the environment.
Established in 2018, the award-winning duo’s work has been exhibited internationally at institutions such as The Tate Modern, V&A London and MEET Milan.
For the exhibition Studio Above&Below created the VR immersive experience titled Quantum Lens, 2025. This multisensory stimulation can evoke strong reactions to the impact that quantum physics and technology have on our daily lives. Exploring the quantum realm, where subatomic particles defy classical laws of physics, the experience unfolds in three chapters, each playfully and poetically interpreting a key quantum principle. Step into Quantum Lens to enjoy the bizarre world of quantum physics.
