Celebrating the Legacy of Boots Through the Ages

This year marks a significant milestone for one of Britain’s most beloved retailers. 175 years ago, John Boot opened a modest herbalist store on Nottingham’s Goose Gate. To commemorate this remarkable anniversary, Boots has teamed up with the University of Nottingham to present Counter Culture: 175 Years of Shopping at Boots. This free exhibition held in at Lakeside’s Djanogly Gallery delved deep into the evolution of shopping since 1849, offering a fascinating blend of design, social history, and the transformation of the high street.

Exploring a Retail Revolution

Counter Culture was not just a retrospective but a visual exploration of how Boots stores have mirrored the shifting social needs, cultural aspirations, and daily lives of people across generations. From the quaint Victorian pharmacies to the sprawling superstores of the 1980s and beyond.

Using historic objects, images, and architecture, the exhibition painted a vivid picture of the creation of modern shopping experiences from both sides of the counter. Visitors were taken on a journey that highlighted how shopping habits and consumer experiences have transformed over nearly two centuries.

Let's take a walk down memory lane

This exhibition was at Lakeside Arts Djanogly Gallery from Friday 3 May until Sunday 21 July 2024.

As we bid farewell to this extraordinary exhibition, we reflect on the rich history of Boots and eagerly anticipate the future innovations that will continue to shape our shopping experiences. Whether you are a long-time customer or a curious newcomer, Boots’ story is a testament to the enduring power of retail to adapt, inspire, and connect.
