Based in Nottingham, John Newling began his practice in the late 1970s as a pioneer of socially engaged art.

This exhibition celebrates 50 years of artist output, centred around a socially engaged practice that includes sculpture, drawing, painting and performance, and over the last 15 years John has created a series of ‘ecology works’ made from plants and soil.

At the centre of this exhibition is a ‘timeline’ displaying small sculptures, maquettes, archive materials, drawings and paintings representing key moments in the artist’s 50-year career.

Also featuring archive material recently acquired by the Henry Moore Institute archive, this exhibition is developed in collaboration with Beam, a contemporary art gallery and publisher located at Primary, Nottingham.
